Crossing cultivated fields and hills dense with vegetation, from the San Corrado di Noto resort, we arrive at Noto, the capital of Sicilian Baroque. At just 31 kilometres from Syracuse, in the foothills of the Hyblaean Mountains, a town that illustrates the miraculous beauty of rebirth.
Noto is an ancient town: the first settlements discovered by archaeologists date from the Castelluccian bronze age civilization (2200 -1450 BC); a succession of powers dominated this area: Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, Aragonese, in line with the rest of Sicilian history. However, in the very decades of the maximum splendour of the magnificent fortified citadel, on 11 January 1693, to be precise, an earthquake razed its buildings to the ground. A thousand people lost their lives as a result of this disaster, but the population did not take this lying down, and launched an unprecedented reconstruction effort.
For this undertaking, the best architects were summoned from all over the island, the majority of whom had trained in Rome, and they were commissioned with the planning of new Noto, which was to rise at a distance of eight kilometres from the previous location, at the decision of Giuseppe Lanza, Duke of Camastra, who was appointed to lead the reconstruction of the Val di Noto.
The end result of the project can be seen and visited by everyone today, with its amazing unimaginable splendour.
